Evangelical Progressivism, Faith in Action and the GOP’s Failure
Only a world in a society in which this is a possibility can we truly be worthy of being dubbed a “City of the Hill.” We don’t have to allow the cracks of omission, invisibility, and dehumanization continue to expand unchecked, as exemplified in our schools, inner cities, Enron, Katrina, and our Aids policy. Another vision is possible. One which honors our common heritage and our common humanity. And one which honors our esteem as a civilized and free nation.
All this comes at a point in which Katrina, Iraq, and systemic torture signals a growing hole in the bottom of our social net and of our collective respect for persons. Increasingly, Jim Wallis who is the editor of Sojourners and in his book God’s Politics wrote a “third space” criticism of the evangelical right’s unquenched embrace of the conservatism in the Reagan-Bush-Bush assault of rights and reason. Wallis emphasizes that Africa, HIV, the environment, Darfur, immigration, and poverty are all moral values issues which reflect our common humanity and destiny. Others have included the issues of child soldiers, LGBT rights, Katrina, worker’s rights, corporate corruption, landmines, and arms control as significant ethically charged values issues. He askews the politics of blame and fear which foster culture of cynicism, apathy, and division.
For people of faith, not only is it a matter of respecting the dignity of persons and honoring the service model of Jesus, but its also an ethical imperative. This ethical call is detailed @
