Respecting God’s Creation

October 16, 2007 · 1 Comment

I ran across this insightful quote about protecting the environment:

If we are participants in God’s story, then care for the earth is not a political issue or a contemporary cause. It is instead an essential part of our identity that we either ignore or embrace. We have the choice of whether our lives will bless what God has made, or only take from what God has made.

Thoughts?

God gave mankind dominion over the earth. He gave us the responsibility to take care of it. That means he made us the gardeners of the earth. He is not opposed to us changing the face of the earth. Quite the contrary. But we have to take good care of it. Being a good gardener doesn’t mean you leave the garden alone or that you leave it in an “unchanging” (what a nonsense word when it comes to, well, almost everything!) state. No. It means you are actively involved in it. Aside from the arsonists and the Santa Ana winds, the fires in California were caused because people left the environment alone (except to put out every little fire that came along) and did not garden the area (controlled burns, etc.).
