Here are a handful of my professional goals for the new year:
• learn how to better facilitate online communities and execute
• learn how to monetize traffic and execute
• learn how to create better content (video, audio, etc..) and execute.
• become more productive
• and be a better person
• no creative ideas left behind (not lost in the fog of life)
• focus on quality creative ideas
• personal care. better work/life balance.
Relationship. Community. Focus. Organization. Execution.
What are your personal or professional goals for the new year?

I was looking for ideas for goals for 2008 for myself and came across this site. I was looking for ideas to come up with additional goals for myself. I really don’t mean to be rude and you can disregard my comments if you wish.
But goals should be SMART. Meaning, they should be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. Your goals are vague and don’t meet those standards.
Goals such as become more productive and be a better person… That’s just vague. How do you measure that? At the end of the year, what will decide if you met those goals or not? I don’t know what you do for a living and I haven’t really explored your site, so my comments may not be appropriate.
But be specific. State a goal of something like ” I want to donate X dollars to my favorite charity” or “I want to go to the gym an average of 4 days a week over the entire 52 weeks of the year” or “I want to save X number of dollars to invest” or whatever. But be specific and set something measurable with a timetable.

Jamie,
Interesting. I’m not sure how SMART applies to being a better person (which is intrinsically not quantifiable). “I will be a 92.5% better person” isn’t exactly helpful or precise. You could say, I will do 12 service projects or I will spend 16 quality hours a week, but even that still misses the point on the larger issues of being a better person.
Emotions aren’t always things you can attach numbers to.
However, I appreciate your comments, I do think that moving from goals to tactics and strategies for implementing those goals will be extremely helpful in helping me move forward.
Thanks for stopping by, reading, and commenting. Your comment caused me to re-think my approach and will help me get one step closer to SMART goals.
