Howdy,
Thanks for reading.
Jeff Howe who coined the term “crowdsourcing” and wrote “Crowdsourcing” just presented at Berkman Center at Harvard University.
His presentation is about an hour long and is available in audio or video. I recommend the audio, because I had trouble streaming the video continuously.
He discussed the recent “spec design debate” that took place at South By Southwest (SXSW) earlier this year, which referenced crowd sourcing logo design sites and Howe pointed to a divide between new designers who were searching for work who seemed to like the option of being able to find spec work and those who are established in the industry and greatly disliked the practice. Its certainly a debate that will occur again and again in different contexts as Crowd sourcing goes mainstream as is adopted by new industries.
Enjoy,
Nathan
I suggest checking out User Voice as a fantastic example of crowd sourcing:
https://uservoice.com/
User Voice has tons of users across the spectrum of business and government and offers a variety of pricing, including a free version.
Its competitors are Sales Force Ideas, Spigit, Crowdsound, and Suggestion Box. Get Satisfaction is related as well. Or you may want to look at this post: http://www.web2review.com/site/3866-User-Voice/competitors/ or the profile at Venture Beat Profiles which points out User Voice competitors:

However, realistically its a fantastic solution for most start ups, small businesses, and even enterprise (according to even Jeremiah Owyang, Random House, MTV, and others). This interview with one of the founders is fantastic: http://mixergy.com/guerilla-twitter/
Here’s a recent article from Entrepreneur magazine which mentions 7 ways to use crowdsourcing in your business:
