Reason, Rationality, Compassion, Emotion, and Empathy and Christianity
Is “rational” human beings killing other “rational” human beings a proof against God?
I would say that as a general rule the Bible and the model of Jesus put compassion, love, and empathy at the very center of ethics. Actually, far more than almost any other ethical framework–which is echoed in thinkers like Ghandi and Martin Luther King Jr. and Mother Teresa and Wilberforce and millions and mission of unsung Christians who help, love, serve, and have compassion on a daily basis.
The example of reason seems to stand as more of an indict of ego-centered vs. other-centered living. Christian faith stands in union with the later.
Being on earth isn’t supposed to be a cake walk–He isn’t here to spoil us. And even atheist philosophers acknowledge the role of challenge, suffering, and endurance in our lives.
PS. I would also refer you to several essays on the “problem of pain” available for free on Compassion in Politics.
