Business Planning & Business Model Resources for Social Enterprises and Organizations

I think these 3 would be at the top of the list:

• REDF has a number of resources: REDF Social Enterprise Business Plan Template and Presentation. You have to sign up to get access I think (Link)
Well apparently you can get it at the Social Impact Exchange without signing up here.

• Business Model Canvas: (Link) (or some iteration of it–see other threads on Quora)

• Recommended by the Mulago Foundation and used by Rainer Arnhold Fellows–Design for Lasting Impact that Goes to Scale (Link)

The business model canvas should be enough to look at the core components of the organization.

* For the social component of the business model, you might add target demographic & marketing & any theory of change behind your model.

** You might also find this helpful in terms of the Business Model Canvas:
a) Combining Business Model Prototyping, Customer Development, and Social Entrepreneurship (link)
b) Another version that seems too simplified IMHO (link)

*** For more depth, you might check out this search on SE Toolbelt for business plan (Link)

**** Possible customer development questions from based on the canvas (link). And still more questions (link) And a visual representation of the questions (link)

***** Quora threads: here, here, and here.

I happen to prefer some of the Business Canvas tools…..because they are simple.

It would seem filling out the 1 page form is a quick way to figure out where you stand–and isolate perhaps some of your core assumptions.
