    • Immunity to Change by Robert Kegan and Lisa Lahey

My next recommended title is Primal Leadership by Daniel Goleman, Richard Boyatzis and Annie McKee. The authors are titans in the field of Emotional Intelligence (E.I.). And even if you never intend to coach a leader, this book will share the latest practical findings on a wide range of topics including; E.I., neuroscience, leadership styles, and the impact of stress. These are all areas that greatly influence the ability of our clients to make progress on many of their social, relationship and career agendas.

Finally, since so many of our clients come to us wanting to be happier or more fulfilled, I think it is a great idea to understand what the rapidly growing field of positive psychology has to teach us about happiness. There are many good books in this area, however I believe The Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt (University of Virginia) does a great job of outlining the wisdom and science of creating more meaning and happiness in your life, and the lives of your clients.

If I was allowed to expand beyond five titles, I would definitely recommend coaches have an understanding of a range of topics including; The Work, by Byron Katie (basic cognitive processing for moving clients past their inevitable blocks), personality typing (choose your favorite, I like MBTI), strengths work (Seligman or Buckingham), transitions (Bridges) relationship dynamics (Gottman and Hendrix) developmental psychology (Laske, Spiral Dynamics and Integral Theory) and most definitely a whole host of business topics that would allow every coach to find their niche, brand themselves, choose the best client contact strategies, and create an online presence that attracts a steady stream of ideal clients. (What’s the point of being a great coach if you can’t share your gifts with a full practice of clients?) Happy reading everyone.

    • Note: integral & spiral dynamics is a bit on the new age side. (its spiritual & not kind to religion)

In Reality in Advertising (Reeves 1961, pp. 46–48) Reeves laments that the U.S.P. is widely misunderstood and gives a precise definition in three parts:

Each advertisement must make a proposition to the consumer. Not just words, not just product puffery, not just show-window advertising. Each advertisement must say to each reader: “Buy this product, and you will get this specific benefit.”

The proposition must be one that the competition either cannot, or does not, offer. It must be unique—either a uniqueness of the brand or a claim not otherwise made in that particular field of advertising.

The proposition must be so strong that it can move the mass millions, i.e., pull over new customers to your product…!

    From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unique_selling_proposition

There is an excellent list by Ogilvy that is quite good–although its more on writing/copywiring in general versus USP.

** I don’t like the pricing. Although it might provoke another layer of conversion.
I think it assumes a product/service competing on price. If you do have a higher
price it probably does mean that it separates the buyers and non-buyers pretty

    Vivek W’s work:

Research that my team completed in 2009 determined that the average age of a successful entrepreneur in high-growth industries such as computers, health care, and aerospace is 40. Twice as many successful entrepreneurs are over 50 as under 25; and twice as many, over 60 as under 20. The vast majority — 75 percent — have more than six years of industry experience and half have more than 10 years when they create their startup. Nearly 70 percent start their companies to capitalize on business ideas that they have — which they see as a way to build wealth.

Searle posits five illocutionary points: 1) Assertives: statements that may be judged true or false because they purport to describe a state of affairs in the world; 2) Directives: statements that attempt to make the auditor´s actions fit the propositional content; 3) Commissives: statements which commit the speaker to a course of action as described by the propositional content; 4) Expressives: statements that express the “sincerity condition of the speech act”; and 5) Declaratives: statements that attempt to change the world by “representing it as having been changed” (Mind 148-50). That is, when we speak (or write) we are doing one or more of the following: asserting, directing, commiserating, expressing, or declaring.
