Nonprofit Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Domination in 6 Weeks

Your Guide to Nonprofit and Charity SEO

Here is a simple rubric. Its based on using 45 minutes per (total of 1.5 hours per week) for a total of 9 hours.

Assignment 1: Two weeks:
Create a small database with links and comments why you like the content

1) Content you like
2) Content that spreads/gets linked to/content that wins/is influential
(This can be in and out of your domain….in fact its helpful if you get at least a 50/50, 60/40, or 40/60 breakdown of each)
3) Content thats important to you or your job–content you’re passionate about

Content Discovery Method:
Anything from Google to Google RSS to Alltop to Technorati to Tailrank to delicious

Technology Platforms: Choose one of the following 6 social media applications

1) Google docs
2) Delicious (Social Bookmarking)
3) Evernote (they also have a free iPhone app)
4) Wiki (PB Works (formerly PB Wiki), Wetpaint, and I believe Wikispaces all have free wiki available for anyone. When in doubt Google “free wiki”)
5) Tumblr (simplified blogging platform)
6) A blog you turn into a tumblr

There are 7 components of blackbox you won’t necessarily have a 100% hold on–but its possible to get closer:

1) Time (more time = more links theoretically. more time = higher rank, due to authority development
2) Real world connections/events which drive links
3) Link asks (for social media PR)
4) Amount of content (have they talked about it 50 vs. 500 times)
5) Changes in Google algorithm
6) Pre-existing social capital and industry authority
7) How geography effects link development (see also #2)

While these are important–and critical to consider in your strategy–don’t let these get you down.

Assignment 2: Draft some content (2 hours and 15 minutes)
1) Continue finding interesting content and bookmarking it (20 to 30 minutes per week)
2) You can create these in or Google docs (1:30 divided into two sessions). Clearly if you are on a writing tear don’t stop yourself. The supposed time guidelines are to inspire you to write “productively.”
3) Provide as much editing as your time allows
4) Search for creative commons pictures on Flickr to add visual communication (you can use delicious to bookmark your favorites)
5) Take 10 minutes and edit them on
6) Take 5 minutes and add these to your posts.
7) If you have 30 to 45 minutes extra–create a listing for your organization on Google, Bing, and Yahoo.

(Note: these times are not inflexible–but can hopefully help keep you on path.

Why is some content linked to and other not? Why does some content spread and other not spread?
Visual? Headline? Use value? Writing style? Other factors?
