The internet is terrible for startups

I’m taking an intentionally contrarian view on this topic–I don’t really believe that the internet and social media is bad for startups….just that its potentially bad if startups don’t pay attention to what the internet can do for people, groups, and organizations:

1) Customer myopia–you don’t actually meet customers. You only email them. This is a hinderance or worse you just research their interests
2) Distraction–the distraction of social networks. Its far to easy to get distracted.
3) Social media is only part of the puzzle–its easy to get sucked into the buzz & hype around toy-like technologies (the techno utopian fantasy)
4) So much of the focus is on consumer internet in the startup space & in the media (perhaps there is more value in B2B for society)
