How much is spent on Christian missions each year?

According to World Christian Trends, Ad 30-Ad 2200: Interpreting the Annual Christian Megacensus here are two key statistics about missions:

5. Percent of Christian resources in countries that are already more than 60% Christian – 91%.
Percent spent in countries where less than half the people have EVER heard of Jesus – 0.03%.

6. It is estimated that Christians worldwide spend around $8 BILLION dollars PER YEAR going to the more than 500 conferences to TALK about missions. That’s more than HALF the total spent DOING missions.

(8 Billion x 2 is $16 Billion. You might however consider that $24 billion depending on your intrepretation)

David B. Barrett, Todd M. Johnson, Christopher Guidry, and Peter Crossing.

Note: I don’t know where they collected their data or method they used to do so. So you might treat this as a guestimation of that information until you know for sure. ,

    Glad it helped Darin,

Its wonderful that people are donating. However, this is a tragic situation to the extent that–money is arguably mismanaged.

I think a Church working group or alliance should be formed to ensure that money is well spent on missions. Throwing money down a whole is not the way we become good stewards to money.

This also suggests that a strategic reassessment of missions based on “effectiveness” could really have a huge impact.
